'There is no point in harbouring a wife
that makes me hungry', the man told
the court
A Nigerian court has recently granted a 57-year-old man
a divorce on the premise that his wife was bringing him
his meals too late at night, local media reported on
Thursday.
Olufade Adeyoka recently explained to a courtroom in
Lagos that he was fed up, that his wife of 25 years,
Olusola, continued to serve him his meals late. In an
interview with the Nigerian newspaper 'Vanguard'
Adeyoka claimed that his wife "had failed in her
matrimonial obligations".
He expressed that he "warned her several times, but she
would not listen". Adeyoka expressed in the court
hearing that "there is no point in harbouring a wife that
makes me hungry" concluding the hearing by angrily
saying he was "totally fed up".
His wife denied the allegations and countered with a far-
fetched alibi, claiming that her husband was planning on
taking another woman in marriage.
However the marital dispute was quickly put to rest by
the court president Olu Adebiyi who despite efforts
granted the divorce, declaring: "The court had tried
several times to reconcile their differences, but all efforts
proved abortive."
This is thought to be the first time a legal divorce has
been granted due to problems regarding domestic mealtime
arrangements, however Nigeria has seen many abnormal
divorce cases granted.
In 2008 a Nigerian pensioner crumbled under the pressure
of his local Islamic leaders and divorced 82 of his 86
wives in order to avoid an eviction under the sharia legal
system. Nigerian website 'Sugar Daily' has gathered an
archive of equally weird divorce applications.
One case is of a 32-year-old businessman who filed for
divorce hours after his expensive wedding when he
discovered his bride had been wearing a "butt pad" to
emphasize the protrusion of her rear.
In a case heard in Lagos, a wife was granted a divorce
after claiming her husband often defecated in their
cooking pots while intoxicated.
Furthermore a 40-year-old carpenter told another court
in Lagos to dissolve his marriage of five years,
complaining that his in-laws often intervened when he was
beating his wife.
